H.S. Johnson was founded in 1946 after the end of World War II. Before the war, Herbert Samuel Johnson worked as a watchmaker, and his abilities were put to good use servicing aircraft equipment as an RAF sergeant during the dark days of the war. He met and married his childhood sweetheart, Violet, when stationed at Fradley. Violet's father was the editor of the Lichfield Mercury. After the war ended, they decided to stay in the area and opened their store in Rugeley, where it remains today.

In the early days, when rationing was still in effect, the business consisted of dealing in war tables. In 1951, Michael Samuel Johnson was born in the store and followed his father into watchmaking. At 14, he began tinkering with clocks, and by 16, he was working full time in the store and attending college during the day to gain the proper qualifications. At 21, he completed his three-year apprenticeship at the School of Jewelry and Silversmiths in Birmingham and then worked full time in the store as a watchmaker.

The family has a rich history of watchmaking, with Michael being the fourth generation and his father the third. Before that, Herbert's father, also named Herbert, was a watchmaker in London and Hove; he also taught watchmaking at a London university and built three watches during that time, one of which we still have in the store. These watches are completely handmade, every part, and are truly amazing to see and hear.

Michael's father, James Johnson, was the manager of Pickett's on Oxford Street in London, and his great uncle, William Johnson, was in charge of fixing and maintaining the clocks at Hampton Court Palace during the Victorian era.
